Our Curriculum

Children are naturally curious. At Kids Connection Childcare, we build on that natural curiosity through a thoughtful blend of Montessori principles, emergent learning, and Alberta’s FLIGHT Framework. This creates a warm, engaging environment where children are encouraged to explore, discover, and grow with confidence.

Montessori
Montessori teaches us that children learn most deeply when they are trusted with real work. In our program that means children pour their own water, care for plants, work with purposeful materials, and develop genuine practical skills at their own pace. There are no shortcuts and no gold stars. The satisfaction comes from the work itself, from a child discovering what their hands and mind are capable of when given the right environment and the freedom to try. That quiet confidence, built one small accomplishment at a time, is something a child carries for life.

Emergent Curriculum
No two groups of children are the same, and no two months in our program look the same either. Emergent curriculum means our educators are first and foremost careful observers. They watch, they listen, and they notice what lights children up. When a child brings a pine cone inside and sparks twenty questions, that pine cone becomes a week of discovery. When the whole room becomes obsessed with shadows, we follow the shadows. Learning here is not delivered to children. It grows from them. That is the difference between a program that keeps children busy and one that genuinely engages them.

Alberta’s FLIGHT Framework
FLIGHT is Alberta's early learning and care framework, and it shapes how we think about what early childhood education is really for. FLIGHT reminds us that a child who feels safe, loved, and genuinely included is a child whose whole self is available for learning. Before phonics, before counting, before any academic skill, there is belonging. There is well-being. There is a child who trusts the people around them enough to take risks, ask questions, and show up fully every single day. FLIGHT keeps that truth at the center of everything we do.

Bringing It All Together

Montessori, Emergent Curriculum, and FLIGHT are not three separate programs running alongside each other. They are three lenses through which we see the same child. Montessori asks what this child's hands need to do. Emergent curriculum asks what this child's mind is hungry to explore. FLIGHT asks whether this child feels safe enough, valued enough, and connected enough to do both. Together they form a curriculum that treats every child as a whole person, not a set of skills to be developed on a timeline. That is what we believe early childhood education should be. And it is what every educator at Kids Connection Childcare brings to work with them every morning.

Our graduates

When a child leaves Kids Connection Childcare to start school, we want them to carry more than academic readiness.

We want them to know who they are.We want them to be the child who raises their hand not because they know the right answer but because they are genuinely curious about the question. The child who tries something difficult, struggles, and tries again because they have learned that the struggle is part of the learning. The child who includes others, stands up for what is fair, and brings their whole self into every room they enter.

We want them to love learning not because we told them to but because they have spent their earliest years in an environment where learning felt like discovery, where their ideas were taken seriously, and where they were trusted to do real things that mattered.

Every child who leaves our program carries that foundation with them. Not just into kindergarten or grade one, but into every classroom, every friendship, and every challenge that comes after. That is what we are building here. And it starts on the very first morning your child walks through our door.

Our community

Kids Connection Childcare draws meaning, richness, and purpose from the community around it. We believe children learn who they are in relationship with the world beyond their classroom. That is why we visit the local library, join the Santa Claus parade, and show up to community events together, because belonging to a neighbourhood is something children need to experience, not just hear about.

We do not follow a generic multicultural calendar. We follow our families. The cultures, traditions, and stories that matter in our rooms are the ones that matter to the children and families actually living them. That is not a program feature. It is a reflection of who we are. And every family that walks through our door makes our community richer.
