What to look for during a childcare centre tour

Choosing where your child will spend their day is an important decision. A website can help you learn the basics, but it cannot show you how a centre truly feels. For that, it helps to visit on an ordinary day: listen to how educators speak with children, notice how the rooms are being used and ask the questions that matter to your family.

A good tour should help you picture your child there. Here is what to look for, along with what you can expect when you visit Kids Connection.

Why we ask families to book a tour

You may have heard advice to drop in unannounced so you can see a centre without preparation. We understand the instinct: you want to see a normal day, not a performance.

Our centres use controlled access to help keep children safe. Enrolled families receive a key fob at no cost. Each fob is assigned to a family and should never be shared. We also ask adults not to hold a secure door open for someone they do not recognize. Visitors are welcomed through the centre’s check-in procedures, and educators cannot step away from the children to lead an unexpected tour.

Booking a tour lets us welcome you properly. You still visit during a real day at the centre, but someone is ready to show you around and answer your questions without asking an educator to step away from the children.

What to expect during your visit

During your tour, you can explore the learning spaces, see the classrooms and playground, meet educators who are available, and hear how the day unfolds. We can talk through programs, hours, tuition and funding, inclusion, food and snacks, outdoor play, family communication and anything specific to your child. Thoughtful questions are always welcome.

You are welcome to bring your child. Their comfort, curiosity and response to the space may help you imagine what starting childcare could feel like for them.

Because the children in our care come first, the rooms you can enter and the educators available to meet you may vary. Children may be resting, moving between activities or needing an educator’s full attention. We will show you as much as we can while respecting the children’s routines, safety and privacy.

What to look for on a childcare tour

Start with relationships

Notice how educators speak with children, especially when a child is upset, frustrated or needs help. Do they get down to the child’s height, listen calmly and take the concern seriously? Do children appear comfortable approaching them?

Warm, responsive relationships are the foundation of a strong childcare experience. The way an educator supports a difficult moment often tells you more than the way they join a happy one.

Look at how the spaces are used

A thoughtful room does not need to look perfectly staged. Look for materials children can reach, choices suited to their age, and signs that the space reflects the children who use it. Look for children’s own ideas and effort rather than only matching, adult-directed results.

At Kids Connection, Montessori-informed practice, emergent curriculum and Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework work together. You may see this in hands-on materials, practical-life experiences, thoughtfully prepared spaces, projects shaped by children’s questions, and an environment built around belonging and relationships.

Ask about the rhythm of the day

Ask what arrival, meals, rest, transitions and play usually look like. A daily routine should give children a reassuring sense of what comes next while leaving room for their needs and interests. It is also worth asking how educators support a child who needs more time with a transition or a quieter place to regain calm.

Ask about outdoor and active play

We plan for approximately 60 minutes of outdoor play on two occasions each day. The timing and duration may change with the weather, temperature, UV level, air quality, playground conditions and the health and safety needs of the children. When outdoor time has to be shortened or cancelled, educators add more opportunities for movement indoors.

Ask any centre how often children go outside, what they do there, and how active play continues when conditions keep them indoors.

Find out how families stay connected

Ask what you will hear about your child’s day and how concerns are handled. Once a child is enrolled at Kids Connection, families use our Centre Parent App for daily journals, agreements, billing, absence notices and announcements. Educators also speak with families at arrival and pickup, and a formal progress report is shared through the app each August.

Good communication should help you feel informed, reassured and connected.

Check the licensing basics

Licensed childcare programs must meet Alberta requirements, including primary staff-to-child ratios and maximum group sizes. Ratios are an important starting point, although they do not tell you everything about the quality of a child’s experience.

These are Alberta’s primary ratios. The Early Learning and Child Care Regulation also addresses mixed-age groups and rest periods, so ask how staffing is planned throughout the day.

How should a tour leave you feeling?

Beyond the checklist, notice whether your questions are welcomed and answered clearly. Listen to how the team speaks about children. Think about whether the routines make sense for your family and whether you can picture your child feeling known, valued and genuinely cared for.

You do not need to make a decision in the room. A good tour should leave you with a clearer picture, not a sales pitch.

After the tour

If Kids Connection feels like the right fit, the next step is to complete the New Parent Registration form. Submitting the form is not the same as having a space confirmed. We review the program requested, your preferred start date and the space available, then follow up with you.

Once an appropriate space has been offered and the required registration, emergency, consent and payment information is complete, we will guide you through the Centre Parent App and help your family prepare for the first day.

If the centre does not feel right for your family, that is useful to know too. A tour has done its job when it helps you choose with greater confidence.
