Frequently asked questions

The most common questions

Do you have space available right now?

Availability changes through the year and depends on your child’s age, the program, the centre and the schedule you need. What matters is the specific room your child would join rather than a general answer. Contact the centre directly or join our waitlist, and we will review your request and come back to you.

How does the waitlist work?

There is no fee to join, and joining does not guarantee a space, a start date, a particular room or a fixed position in a queue. Siblings of currently enrolled children, and children already with us who are moving between programs or locations, receive priority consideration. Placements are not strictly first come, first served: we consider the date of enquiry, your child’s age and program needs, your requested start date and schedule, available space, staffing and planned transitions. When a suitable space is offered you have at least two business days to respond, unless the proposed start date is sooner.

What are your hours, and where are your centres?

Both centres are open Monday to Friday, 6 am to 6 pm, and are closed on weekends, statutory holidays and the planned closure days shown on the current Centre Closure Calendar. Our High River centre is at 760 Centre Street SE, High River. Our Diamond Valley centre is at 201, 118 Main Street NW, Diamond Valley, the town formed by the amalgamation of Turner Valley and Black Diamond. Both centres offer daycare and Out of School Care.

What ages do you care for?

Daycare is for children from 10 months of age, the earliest we enrol, until they begin school kindergarten. Kindergarten care is for children enrolled in full-time school kindergarten. After School Care and Before and After School Care are for children in Grades 1 to 6. Summer Camp Care runs 1 July to 31 August for children in full-time kindergarten through Grade 6. We do not offer Before School Care on its own.

How do I book a tour?

You can book a tour on our register page, or ask Kora, the assistant on this website. She reads the centre’s own tour calendar and books the time you choose, so nobody needs to ring you back to confirm it. On a tour you can meet available educators, explore the learning spaces, see the rooms and playground, and learn about the daily routine. You can also ask about programs, availability, fees, subsidy, inclusion and your child’s needs.

How does Alberta affordability funding apply to daycare fees?

At eligible licensed daycares, families with eligible children who are kindergarten age or younger pay $326.25 per month for 100 or more registered hours, or $230 per month for 50 to 99 registered hours. Kindergarten-age children qualify only when they attend childcare during regular school hours and are not attending full-time kindergarten. KCC’s daycare fees already reflect this funding; optional services are additional.

Part-time care at KCC is not guaranteed. Please enquire first. Availability depends on your child’s age, the requested schedule, the centre, staffing and current space availability. A part-time space is confirmed only after the centre has reviewed and approved the request.

Who may qualify for the out-of-school care subsidy?

Families with a combined annual income below $90,000 may qualify when their child attends full-time Kindergarten or Grades 1–6 and is enrolled in licensed childcare outside regular school hours. Families must also meet Alberta’s residency and childcare-need requirements. The amount depends on family income, the child’s grade, the program and monthly attendance. Alberta uses information from Line 15000 of the family’s most recent CRA Notices of Assessment. Eligibility and subsidy amounts are determined by the Government of Alberta; check the current rules and apply at alberta.ca/child-care-subsidy-program.

How do I apply for the out-of-school care subsidy, and when does it start?

Families apply to the Government of Alberta, which decides eligibility and the approved amount; KCC cannot decide either. You need a secured childcare space to apply, and you can apply as early as the month before care begins.

Subsidy starts no earlier than the beginning of the month in which Alberta receives your completed application. Approvals can take several weeks, and Alberta states that savings can be retroactive to the approved start month when the completed application was submitted in that month.

Families are responsible for applying, renewing on time, reporting changes and meeting any attendance requirement, and remain responsible for fees a subsidy does not cover. Apply and read the current rules at alberta.ca/child-care-subsidy-program, or call the Alberta Supports Contact Centre on 1 877 644 9992.

What is included in tuition?

Tuition reserves your child’s confirmed space and covers KCC’s core licensed childcare program, including certified educators, individualized learning experiences, indoor and outdoor play, learning documentation and regular family communication.

Program-specific inclusions, such as PD-day and school-break care, are identified with each program. Optional services are billed separately. School transportation, where offered, requires enrolment in the Essential Services Package.

Are there any additional fees?

The optional Essential Services Package costs $35 per month. It includes the diapers, wipes, morning and afternoon snacks, milk or yogurt, sunscreen, insect repellent and program transportation that apply to your child’s program. Families who decline the package provide the applicable items themselves. School transportation, where offered, requires enrolment in Essential Services.

To start or stop Essential Services, give the Director written notice before the 15th of the month. The change takes effect on the first day of the following month.

A separate optional centre-provided lunch service is coming soon. Details will be added once they are confirmed.

Other charges apply only when relevant. These include a late-pickup fee of $2 per minute, per child, and a $40 fee for a returned payment. An enrolment deposit applies only when it is included in the written terms provided to your family before the space is confirmed.

Do you offer part-time or drop-in care?

Please enquire before registering for part-time or drop-in care. Neither option is guaranteed.

Part-time daycare may be available for children from 10 months through kindergarten who are not attending school full time. Approval depends on your child’s age, the requested schedule, the centre, staffing and available space.

Drop-in care may be available by advance arrangement and is also subject to space and staffing. The centre will review your request and confirm whether care can be offered. Current rates are shown with each program on our tuition page.

When and how is tuition paid?

Monthly tuition and recurring fees are billed in advance on the 20th of each month for the following month, normally through pre-authorized debit. Because tuition reserves your child’s space, fees remain payable during illness, vacations, statutory holidays and planned closure days. Families can view invoices through the Centre App or Parent Portal.

What will my child learn and experience each day?

KCC combines Montessori-informed practice, emergent curriculum and Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework. Children experience a thoughtful balance of child-led and educator-guided learning, hands-on exploration, creative play, movement, outdoor experiences, meals and rest or quiet time. Educators adapt experiences to the children’s ages, interests, development and individual needs.

What qualifications do your educators have?

KCC educators meet Alberta’s Early Childhood Educator certification requirements for their positions. Every educator maintains current First Aid and CPR certification and completes criminal record and vulnerable-sector screening. Centre Directors hold a recognized early childhood education diploma, degree or equivalent qualification and have at least three years of relevant experience.

What are your educator-to-child ratios?

These are the standard daycare ratios and maximum group sizes set by Alberta’s Early Learning and Child Care Regulation (AR 143/2008, Schedule 1, section 27). The regulation permits different ratios during children’s rest periods, as explained on our room program pages.

Age of child Educator to children Maximum group size
Under 12 months 1 to 3 6
12 months to under 19 months 1 to 4 8
19 months to under 3 years 1 to 6 12
3 years to under 4 years 1 to 8 16
4 years and older 1 to 10 20

Out of School Care is 1 to 15 with a maximum group of 30. In a combined age group, the ratio and maximum group size are those of the age group most of the children belong to.

Why does it matter that a childcare centre is licensed?

Both Kids Connection centres are licensed by the Government of Alberta, and Alberta’s affordability funding applies only to eligible licensed programs. Licensing means the province’s Early Learning and Child Care Regulation (AR 143/2008) sets the ratios, group sizes, staffing, certification and screening described below.

A licensed daycare must keep the regulation’s educator-to-child ratios and maximum group sizes at all times, and must have at least two adult staff whenever seven or more children are in care.

A program supervisor certified as a Level 3 Early Childhood Educator must be on duty whenever children are present, and someone with current first aid certification must be on duty at all times. Every staff member and volunteer needs a criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening before any unsupervised access to children.

What does a typical day look like?

Routines vary by room and season, so we do not promise an exact timetable.

We plan for about 60 minutes of outdoor play twice a day when the weather, temperature, air quality and playground conditions allow. When outdoor time is shortened, educators add indoor movement, and every day includes at least two indoor movement periods of 10 to 20 minutes.

Infants follow their own sleep schedules. Full-day programs have an after-lunch rest or quiet period of up to two hours, with quiet activities for children who do not sleep. School-age children get a quiet transition rather than a nap.

Screens are not part of the regular program and are never used with children under four. For children four and older, brief educational media may occasionally support the curriculum with an educator involved.

What should my child bring each day?

Please label everything with your child’s name. Each day your child needs indoor shoes, a labelled water bottle, at least two complete changes of clothing, and clothing and footwear suited to the season and the forecast.

For rest time, bring a fitted crib or cot sheet and a small blanket when your centre asks for them, and an approved comfort item if it helps your child settle. Toys and treats stay at home unless we ask for them for an activity.

Children play actively, creatively and outdoors, so clothing may get stained or damaged. We take reasonable care of belongings but cannot guarantee against loss, stains or damage.

What about meals and snacks?

Morning and afternoon snacks include foods from at least two food groups. The centre provides them for children enrolled in the Essential Services Package. Families who decline the package send their child’s snacks, milk or yogurt and other applicable items.

Families currently send a nutritious, ready-to-eat lunch each day. A separate optional centre-provided lunch service is coming soon, and details will be added once they are confirmed.

Record every allergy, sensitivity, dietary restriction and feeding requirement in the Centre Parent App before care begins, and update the information immediately whenever something changes. Please also speak with the Director so a safe plan can be put in place.

Families provide all formula or expressed breast milk and age-appropriate infant food until each food has been introduced safely at home.

How do you keep children safe?

Every family has a key fob for the centre’s controlled doors, and we release a child only to a parent, guardian or authorized pickup person, with identification checked when the person is not known to the educator. Educators pause for a stop and count during transitions.

We keep plans for evacuation, lockdown, hold and secure, shelter in place, severe weather and utility failures, and practise the required drills with children calmly. In an emergency we account for every child and share verified instructions through the Centre Parent App, email, text or telephone.

Incident reports are completed for accidents needing first aid and for anything relevant to a child’s health or safety, and families acknowledge them in the app. Every educator holds current First Aid and CPR and a criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening, and access to camera video is limited to authorized management.

How will I hear about my child’s day?

Educators share information with you at pickup and through the Centre Parent App, ChildFriendly. The app is used for enrolment information, agreements, billing, journals and daily updates, absence notices, announcements and messages to centre administration.

Direct messaging with room educators is not enabled. Please telephone the centre when something is urgent or time-sensitive.

Families can also report absences, update important information and review incident reports through the app. A formal progress report is provided each August.

My child needs additional support. Can you accommodate that?

We welcome children with different abilities, cultures, languages, identities and support needs, and we do not discriminate on a protected ground under the Alberta Human Rights Act. Educators adapt environments, materials, routines and communication so children have meaningful ways to take part alongside their peers. When a child needs additional support we work with the family and, with consent where appropriate, community or developmental professionals. The Director will discuss your child’s individual needs before confirming an accommodation.

How do you support children through challenging behaviour?

KCC uses positive guidance rather than punishment. Educators provide clear and developmentally appropriate boundaries, offer meaningful choices, model respectful behaviour, help children understand their feelings and support them in solving problems. Physical punishment, humiliation, isolation and withholding basic needs are never permitted.

Which schools do you provide transportation from?

From High River we currently serve Spitzee School, Holy Spirit Academy and École Joe Clark School. From Diamond Valley we serve Turner Valley School and C. Ian McLaren School. Travel is on foot or by program bus depending on the school, the route, the weather and road conditions.

Program transportation is part of Essential Services, so a child must be enrolled in Essential Services to use it, and the centre confirms your child’s school, program, schedule and route before it starts.

To cancel a ride, use the RSVP feature in the Centre Parent App at least 30 minutes before the scheduled route, or call the centre if less time remains. Morning and afternoon routes are cancelled separately.

What is your illness policy?

Children must stay home when they have a temperature of 38°C or higher; vomiting or diarrhea; swollen glands or a new or worsening sore throat; a new or unexplained rash; unexplained pain that prevents comfortable participation; a new, persistent or worsening cough; shortness of breath; or a communicable illness requiring exclusion. Children must also stay home whenever their symptoms prevent them from participating comfortably in the full program.

A child may return when they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, their symptoms have improved, and they are well enough to participate comfortably. At least 48 hours must have passed since the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea. For a rash or communicable illness, any exclusion period required by a physician, nurse practitioner or public health must also be completed.

How do drop-off and sign-in work?

Bring your child directly into the centre, sign in using the centre’s attendance process, and hand your child to an educator. Our responsibility for your child begins only once those steps are complete, so children must never be left at an entrance or doorway.

If your child will be absent or will arrive after 9:30 am, report it through RSVP in ChildFriendly as soon as possible and no later than 10:00 am, with an approximate arrival time.

Educators stop and count during transitions. Please do not interrupt a stop-and-count or drop off or pick up until the educator confirms it is complete.

Who can pick up my child?

We release a child only to a parent or guardian, or to an authorized pickup person who is at least 18. Authorization is given by the parent or guardian in the Centre Parent App or in writing, so keep your pickup list current.

If someone not on the list arrives, we must receive and verify authorization from the parent or guardian first. If it cannot be verified, the child is not released. Anyone not known to the educator will be asked for current government-issued photo identification.

Custody or access arrangements must be on file in writing so we can follow them.

How much notice do you need if we withdraw or change our schedule?

Give the Centre Director written notice of withdrawal at least 30 calendar days in advance. Withdrawal takes effect only on the last day of a calendar month, and tuition remains payable through the end of the month in which the 30-day notice period is completed.

For example, notice received on 16 July means August tuition is still due and registration ends on 31 August.

Requests to change a program, schedule, start date or location must also be in writing. They depend on the options offered, available space, staffing and operational needs, and no change is in effect until we confirm it in writing with its date and any fee impact.

Can you give my child medication?

Yes, with your written authorization. Add the medication in ChildFriendly for the Director to approve, and bring it unexpired in its original, labelled container. Educators give it as authorized and record each dose.

What happens if my child becomes ill at the centre?

If your child develops symptoms of illness at the centre, we notify you immediately and ask that a parent, guardian or authorized person pick your child up within a reasonable time. While waiting, your child is supervised and kept as separate from the other children as practicable.

Your child may return once they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, their symptoms have improved, and they are well enough to participate comfortably, with at least 48 hours since the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea. For a rash or communicable illness, your child stays away for the period public health or a physician requires, and we may ask for written medical confirmation.

How do I report an absence?

Report an absence or a late arrival through the Centre Parent App, ChildFriendly, using the RSVP feature, with the reason and an approximate arrival time. If your child will be absent or will arrive after 9:30 am, report it as soon as possible and no later than 10:00 am. If the absence or delay arises later in the day, report it as soon as you can.

Do children go on outings?

Yes. Neighbourhood walks and community outings are part of the regular program and can include nearby parks, playgrounds, libraries, recreation spaces and green spaces. Children travel on foot, with wagons or strollers for younger children, and educators keep the required ratios, complete regular headcounts and carry emergency records.

Our school-age children are regulars at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex and the spray park in High River, and at the spray park and the Dr. Lander Memorial Swimming Pool and Spray Park in Diamond Valley, in season. Out of School Care field trips from both centres have included Bar U Ranch National Historic Site and Granary Road. No particular trip is promised; where a year’s trips go depends on the group and the season.

A location-specific Walking Excursion Agreement is signed at enrolment and lists the approved destinations for your centre. Each Out of School Care field trip also needs its own completed Field Trip Agreement for each child, returned by drop-off on the morning of the trip. A child without a completed agreement stays at the centre, and children must arrive before the announced departure time.

How do I raise a concern or make a complaint?

Bring any concern to the Centre Director or an educator in person, by telephone, by email or by post; a concern given to an educator is referred to the Director. If the concern involves the Director, or you are not comfortable raising it with the Director, you may contact the Owner directly.

Information is shared only with those who need it to review and respond, or when disclosure is permitted or required by law.

The Director acknowledges a concern within three business days and normally responds within seven business days. If it remains unresolved, you may request a review by the Owner.

Still have a question?

Send us a question, or ask Kora, the assistant on this page. We reply to every enquiry within two business days.
