Five ways to make the first month of childcare easier

Starting childcare changes the shape of a family’s day. Your child is learning new adults, a new rhythm and a new place to put their shoes. You are learning a new morning, a new goodbye and a new way of wondering how their day is going.

It is normal for that transition to take time. These are five things that, in our experience, help the first month feel more familiar for everyone.

1. Label everything and pack the same bag each day

A well-packed bag makes busy mornings easier and helps educators find what your child needs. Please send:

  • indoor shoes and a labelled water bottle;
  • at least two complete changes of clothing;
  • outdoor clothing suited to the season and the day’s forecast;
  • a fitted crib or cot sheet and a small blanket when requested for rest; and
  • an approved comfort item when it helps your child settle.

Put your child’s name on everything, including outerwear, mittens and footwear. Children paint, dig, climb, explore water and occasionally miss the cup. Choose comfortable clothing that allows them to join in without anyone worrying about a stain.

Toys and treats are best left at home unless an educator has requested them. Follow the classroom educator’s direction for storing food and drinks rather than leaving them unattended in a backpack or cubby. Medication must never be packed with your child’s belongings.

Once the essentials are covered, consistency helps. When the same things arrive in the same bag and go into the same cubby, your child has one less new detail to manage.

2. Keep goodbye warm, clear and predictable

Bring your child into the centre, help them put away their belongings, complete the attendance process and walk them to the classroom. Hand them directly to an educator and wait until the educator acknowledges their arrival before you leave.

A simple goodbye ritual can make the handoff more familiar. It might be one hug, the same reassuring phrase and a wave at the door. Tell your child that you are leaving and that you will return. For a young child, a familiar part of the day, such as after afternoon snack, is often easier to understand than a time on the clock.

Then allow the educator to take over. Try not to disappear without saying goodbye or return repeatedly after leaving. A child may still cry, and that does not mean you handled the goodbye badly. It means saying goodbye is hard. Their educator will stay with them, help them through the feeling and begin building the relationship that makes future mornings easier.

If your child needs a different approach, talk with the educator or Director so you can plan it together.

3. Set up the Centre Parent App before the first day

Once enrolment is confirmed, you will receive an invitation to our Centre Parent App, ChildFriendly. Open it before the morning you need it, check that your information is correct and turn on notifications so you do not miss an announcement. If the invitation has not arrived, check your spam folder and then contact the centre so we can confirm the email address on your account.

The app brings together your child’s information, agreements, billing, journals, absence notices, announcements and messages to centre administration. Messaging room educators is not enabled at Kids Connection. Urgent information should always be shared by telephone, while everyday questions can be discussed with the educator at arrival or pickup or with the Director.

Read the journal as a window into the room rather than a scorecard. It shares selected activities, photographs, learning and moments from the day; it is not a minute-by-minute transcript. The fuller picture comes from what you see over time and from conversations with the people caring for your child.

4. Tell us what the forms cannot

Every allergy, sensitivity, dietary restriction and feeding requirement must be recorded in the Centre Parent App before care begins and updated immediately when something changes. Please also speak with the Director so a safe plan can be put in place. Sending a message does not update your child’s official record.

Medication requires an approved Medication Authorization Form and must arrive in its original, labelled container. Hand it directly to the Director or your child’s educator. Never leave medication, ointment or cream in a backpack or cubby.

Then tell us the small, unofficial things too: the word your toddler uses for their soother, what a difficult night looks like the next morning, the song that helps during a transition or which family member your child may talk about when they need comfort.

Educators adapt routines, materials and communication around the children in front of them. These details help them understand the child behind the forms.

5. Look for patterns, not perfect days

A hard Tuesday can simply be a hard Tuesday. Settling into childcare does not always move in a straight line. A child may have a comfortable morning followed by a difficult one, or feel the change more strongly after a weekend or time away.

Look for small changes across several days. Your child may begin recovering more quickly after goodbye, recognizing the day’s routine, approaching an educator for help, joining the play or showing you in their own way that the room is becoming familiar.

Stay in conversation with us during that process. Share changes you are seeing at home and ask what educators are noticing after you leave. If a pattern worries you, speak with your child’s educator or the Director early so home and centre can compare what they are seeing and plan the right support together.

The first month does not need to be perfect. The goal is for your child to learn, little by little: the adults here know me, my family comes back, and this is a place whose rhythm I can trust.
